ERROR #16 Not looking after your feet
SCHOOLGIRL ERRORS
THE LESSON
Without healthy feet, you won’t be able to run. Look after them and you can keep running, hopefully forever!
THE TEACHER
Matthew Fitzpatrick, the College of Podiatry and lead podiatrist for the London Marathon
When you run, your body weight is multiplied by up to seven times, with your feet bearing the brunt of this impact at every stride. Over the course of a marathon, half marathon or 10K that’s a lot of stress on your poor feet!
The demands made on your feet and lower limbs can lead to a range of injuries. If you experience frequent and ongoing pain in your feet, ankles and legs when you run, this could be a sign your footwear isn’t right or that you have a musculoskeletal issue. It’s important not to run through pain as that could cause long-term damage. The key is not to neglect your feet in the first place, but to look after them.
