Sumptuous and surprising images take centre stage in our Winter issue as we reveal the winners of Black+White Photographer of the Year 2012! As well as all the winning and commended images, we’ve also got our selection of stunning photographs that didn’t quite make the cut but need to be seen.
This year’s competition garnered over 6,000 images from around the world and, taking our cue from this inspirational crop of modern monochrome we look towards 2013 in anticipation of the trends, exhibitions and books yet to come. Tim Clinch also looks at the bright side of life as he considers the importance of staying cheerful and leaving your audience uplifted.
Described as black and white on acid, Marjorie Salvaterra’s work gives us plenty to talk about as she takes up the BW hot seat. Meanwhile, Susan Burstine puts the excitement back into the morning post as she brings us fascinating photographs of vintage letters from across the pond and Colin Harding reveals the ups and downs of an influential 19th century photographer.
Feeding our photo fanaticism this month; Eddie Ephraums explains how to showcase our images in ebook format, Lee Frost blurs the boundary between landscape and fine art and we bid a fond farewell to Tim Daly’s DSLR video series as he explains your exporting options.
Don’t think gear has got off lightly in the competition frenzy, we still have six of the best compact cameras for your money, top photography books and the latest camera kit. Plus, news, photography exhibitions, Building a Classic Library, your monthly photographic challenge and out favourite reader’s images.

Very good magazine in need of some fresh perspectives

For the most part, I find B/W Photography Magazine essential reading: well-written; informative and with a good balance between different styles and methods. I especially like features about photographers and their work, the news and the book section.

I have one reservation. Apart from Lee Frost, I no longer read any of the staff writer/photographers. I feel that it is time for some fresh ideas and new perspectives.
