In the past, life was all about survival. These days, much of it’s about self-improvement. Whoever you are and however hard you try, there’s always more you could do. The wellbeing world is particularly guilty of this: Be less stressed. Meditate daily. Eat mindfully. Get into nature. If you want to be happy, you must keep improving. Whatever you’re doing right now, you’re probably not doing it well, or regularly, enough. To better oneself is seen as a noble aim. Even if you don’t believe in striving to be richer or more powerful, you may not be immune to the lure of the forward march.
