Unsung heroes
From brushes to needles, cutters to chisels, the tools you use to craft and create are worthy of appreciation
Every time I reach for my scissors, I don’t really think about them. I just use them – to trim that loose edge, or cut that wool or strand of thread with quiet determination. My orange-handled pair of scissors used to belong to my nan, and as we were sorting through her Aladdin’s cave of a craft room, I spotted them. With a small piece of green ribbon attached to one of the bows, I picked them up and I’ve had them in my project basket ever since. They’ve now been with me for years, a trusty companion through dozens of projects.
Recently, as I packed away my supplies at the end of a joyful evening teaching crafting, I paused, scissors in hand, and felt something unexpected: gratitude. The kind that makes you stop mid-motion and breathe a little deeper. What if I said thank you to the tools I use – not out of obligation, but as an act of quiet recognition?
