The Black House is a four-bedroom holiday home set in the heart of the Kent countryside, created for the owners by AR Design Studio. The project was inspired by the nearby Sissinghurst Castle Garden, where gardens are broken into a series of individual experiences, with each space hidden from each other by walls and hedges. To reflect this, the property is a collection of five modules clustered around a central courtyard, and each block is linked to a distinct aspect of the garden. In addition to Sissinghurst, the design team took inspiration from the traditional black clad houses of local Dungeness – as well as the historic net huts found in Hastings, in East Sussex. As a response, vertical black larch cladding was used extensively on the exterior.
