When the Louis Vuitton brand entered luxury luggage retail in the 1850s, it swiftly transformed the marketplace with its high-quality trunks which were lightweight, airtight and, crucially, stackable. Until then, rounded-top trunks had been used (generally to promote water run-off) and thus could not be stacked. The first such flat-top design was Vuitton’s grey ‘Trianon’ canvas trunk.
