AHEAD of the launch of its first service, rail distribution firm Orion used Euston station to demonstrate the concept of high-speed parcel deliveries by train.
Bi-mode Class 768 No. 768001 (recently reclassified from Class 769 No. 769501) was used in July 7’s demonstration, staged in partnership with Network Rail. It is one of three units in Orion’s trial high-speed logistics fleet, all of which have been converted from Class 319s.
Seating and other interior fittings have been removed to accommodate roll cages for parcels use.
With a top speed of 100mph, Orion is marketing the former passenger multiple units as a solution for satisfying the growing demand for faster freight deliveries, especially for online retailers or businesses requiring the speedy dispatch of light goods.
