AROUND 400 tonnes of locallygrown timber was moved by train in a trial working between Newton Abbot in Devon and Abergavenny in Monmouthshire on January 19.
The movement saw the cargo transported on behalf of independent timber harvesting company Euroforest for Pontrilas Sawmills. It is estimated to be about 20 years since the Up Sidings at Abergavenny last saw traffic of this kind and is the first time in over five years that Euroforest has moved timber by rail in the South West of England.
The logs were unloaded for onward movement by road to the sawmill near Hereford by Pontrilas Haulage.
