Railway steps up to support mourners for the Queen
Additional trains scheduled and hired, and main termini remained open overnight for passengers travelling to pay respects to the late monarch.

A MAJOR operation involving thousands of railway staff, dozens of additional train services and 24-hour opening of a number of main railway stations was launched to cope with mourners flocking to pay their last respects to Queen Elizabeth II.
Transport for London prepared for “unprecedented” travel demand on the day of the Queen’s funeral, September 19, anticipating one million spectators in central areas of the capital close to the royal palaces.
Westminster, St James’s Park and Hyde Park Corner Tube stations were closed for most of the morning and Green Park was ‘exit only’ between 10.00 and 20.00. London Underground services were extended into the early hours of Tuesday to allow for those heading home.
