HMM, the South Korean ship operator, has revealed plans to expand its container ship fleet by 50 per cent, while looking to almost double its bulk carrier fleet by 2026. Looking to spend around KRW15 trillion ($11.45 billion), the company wants to increase its container ship capacity from 820,000 to 1.2 million TEU while upping the number of bulk carriers by 26, to 55 vessels. Alongside the fleet increase, the company is to invest in terminals and logistics facilities.
Looking further afield at its carbon neutrality goal for 2050, the company is said to be looking at ordering ships which use alternative carbon-neutral fuels going forward. The company, which until 2020 was known as Hyundai Merchant Marine, achieved profits of over $4.4 billion in 2021, and reported a $2.4 billion net profit in the first quarter of 2022.
