I’ve come home to the house I grew up in

A trip down memory lane gave Pamela McGowan the key to her future
Pamela wanted an elegant and comfortable living room which would exude a calm atmosphere. The cool neutral shades in this room, provided by Carrera wallpaper and woodwork in Warm White, both by Zoffany, reflect the light and enhance the traditional features such as the fireplace by Stonecraft of Edinburgh. She chose sofas and cushions from John Lewis

Good idea!

Using gold fabric as a themed shade in soft furnishings creates opulent warmth throughout the house.

With retirement on the horizon, Edinburgh born Pamela McGowan felt the time was right to return to her Scottish roots. Having lived and worked in the London area since l972, she knew exchanging her four-bedroom house in Billericay for a home in Scotland would release capital to supplement her pension. Also, Pamela retained many friends in Scotland and fond memories of growing up in the Georgian house in East Lothian which her father had bought in 1957.

‘I was seven when we moved in. It was Boxing Day and I remember being thankful my father had put in electricity and a bathroom before we moved in. We absolutely loved living there but in 1965, when I was coming up to 15, Dad was offered a house conveniently situated next door to where he worked. Reluctantly, he accepted although we, and my mother in particular, didn’t want to leave. Even after it was sold, we’d often deliberately drive past what we always called ‘our’ house.’
