Light up your garden with bulbs

Plan ahead for a stunning springtime display
Main image iBulb

Spring flowering bulbs are indispensable as an economical way to boost your borders at a time of year that is otherwise still slowly waking from hibernation. What’s more, with a bit of forethought, you can ensure you have something of interest from the beginning of March right through to the end of May using bulbs alone.

Although it may seem a bit premature, autumn is the prime time to plan and plant what you want to enjoy in spring. And, while the thought of heading out into the garden on a chilly day with a bag of bulbs may not sound that enticing, the short time you spend digging and planting will reward you many times over and will demand little more effort from you once the initial work is completed.

What to plant

Spring flowering bulbs, also known as autumn planted bulbs, include a vast number of species, with something to see you through from the tail end of winter until the beginning of summer. There’s even a bulb to suit every situation, from a shady corner to a border that basks in the sun.

There are few sights more enchanting than a carpet of bluebells in dappled shade come spring

⚫ For early colour bluebells are ideal and will light up any patch that replicates its natural woodland setting, so if you have a very shaded corner in which little else survives, these will thrive here. They’ll happily spread and reward you with an impressive display year on year. Whether buying as bulbs or planting in the green, opt for English bluebells from a reputable source to prevent the spread of Spanish bluebells in the wild.
