DAPHNE & CELESTE
DAPHNE & CELESTE SAVE THE WORLD
BALATONIC
Daphne & Celeste are best remembered as pop puppets booked for 2000’s Reading Festival then bottled off for their trouble. While this showed indie fans at their most intolerant, the duo’s attempts to claim their appearance was tongue-in-cheek weren’t much smarter. Now they’re back with an album masterminded by electronica boffin Max Tundra, but the sense they think they’re above it all prevails, with any claim it’s an elaborate joke merely an excuse for failure: “People just don’t understand”. Admittedly, anyone looking for a lo-fitake on kitsch mid-90s Japanese pop may be amused by the breezy Sunny Day or the over-excitable Paint Can.
