One of the pioneering figures of the synth-pop explosion, it’s easy to forget just how successful Gary Numan’s career was in the late 70s and early 80s. Producing a string of seminal albums and two genre-defining singles in Cars and Are ‘Friends’ Electric?, his groundbreaking artwork, videos and live performances were so innovative that even a certain Mr Bowie felt threatened enough to have Numan ejected from watching his performance on Kenny Everett’s TV show.
