DEEPER INTO STORIES – THE VIDEOS 2000-PRESENT
KATE BUSH HAS NEVER BEEN ONE TO FOLLOW THE TYPICAL PROMOTIONAL TRAIL, AND WHILE THE ARTIST HAS FADED FROM THE FOREGROUND IN HER VISUAL WORK HER NARRATIVES BECOME, IF ANYTHING, STRANGER, STRONGER AND MORE POIGNANT…
KING OF THE MOUNTAIN
JIMMY MURAKAMI, 2005
This 2005 release is the last of the traditional promotional films Kate Bush has produced (bar 2014’s live promo of And Dream Of Sheep) and the final to clearly feature the singer-songwriter – ascenario likely to continue, given her reluctance to issue any actual footage from her triumphant 2014 live shows. The haunting sepia tone of the opening scenes yields to a richer colour palette as the narrative dances – literally – around the legacy of Elvis and his death. Highly individual and yet collectively poignant, Bush’s unique ability to pitch abstract themes in the context of the highly personal here lies testament to her position as one of the medium’s true innovators.
