Q Can you remember your reaction when you heard Kate Bush for the first time?
A I was only a very small boy at the time Wuthering Heights came out, and the “white dress” video was constantly present. Her high-pitched register and swooping arm moves were unlike anything else on telly at the time. Her uniqueness was lost on my young ears back then, though. I thought she was some kind of spooky witch!
Q What was it about her music that made you a devotee?
A I became completely fascinated by her music at around the age of 16. At the time I’d mostly listened to 80s indie bands and typical angsty teenage fare. Her music seemed to come from somewhere completely different. It became a guide for me of sorts into so many other areas of music, art, books – it threw open the windows of possibility. It was utterly refreshing and exhilarating… life-changing.
Q At what point did your casual fandom evolve into something more?
A Over the course of a year I voraciously bought all the albums, pored over the lyrics and acquired some books and things… anything I could lay my hands on. I think it was only when I subscribed to HomeGround magazine that I discovered the strong community of fans that existed out there and the huge respect they felt for Kate and her work.
