KEY RECORDINGS – THE DREAMING
Bush’s third album Never For Ever was a co-production between her and Jon Kelly; her fourth, however, saw her take total control. The Dreaming was a feat of solipsist self-indulgence – in a good way – as she tested the limits of the new technology at her disposal, notably the Fairlight CMI.
Described as a maximalist paradise, The Dreaming employed not just the latest equipment but also a variety of exotic and/or unusual (folk) instrumentation, including mandolins, uilleann pipes and didgeridoos. Bush brought her pop sensibility to bear on an array of unexpected time signatures, rich textures, samples, vocals loops and idiosyncratic polyrhythms. The songs explored subjects as varied as the dark side of one’s character (Leave It Open), the pursuit of knowledge (Sat In Your Lap), armed crime (There Goes A Tenner), the Vietnam war (Pull Out The Pin), the plight of Aborigines (The Dreaming) and the life of an escapologist (Houdini) while Get Out Of My House was based on the novel The Shining by Stephen King.
