Motor City Is Burning: Michigan Anthology
1965-1972 GRAPEFRUITKick out the jams, motherfuckers. For once, Kiss were right about something: Detroit, Michigan is the most rock city in the world. All the clichés are true: from its unique status as the city that gave the world both hard rock bands and Tamla Motown, to its reputation as a city in decline that’s too tough to die, Detroit is like nowhere else in the world. Even leaving aside the contribution made to music by Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, Norman Whitfield and the many acts signed by Berry Gordy, there’s also a powerful variety of rock acts, from Bob Seger and Alice Cooper to The Stooges and the MC5, from Mitch Ryder And The Detroit Wheels to ?And The Mysterians. And then there are the hundreds of garage rock bands the city has produced -The Woolies, The Underdogs, The Rationals, the Scott Richard Case. There is no one Detroit sound but there is a Detroit attitude, from Iggy’s wild-eyed stare to the fuck-you sound of early Bob Seger singles.
