Openreach has shut down the first telephone exchange ahead of the 2027 deadline for the copper network switch-off. The exchange in Deddington, Oxfordshire, (pictured) is the first of 4,600 to be axed across the UK.
Openreach currently has 5,600 exchanges but will need only 1,000 to provide digital services once it has deactivated the old copper network.
