Read web pages more easily in Chrome
Your mobile browser’s reading (or reader) mode provides welcome relief from the ads, videos and other clutter that make browsing the web on your phone or tablet an increasing ordeal. Google has updated the Android version of Chrome to help you switch to its reading mode more easily, and customise how streamlined web pages are presented.
To try the improved feature when viewing a cluttered online article, tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner of the browser and select ‘Show Reading mode’. This will instantly remove everything but the text and main images from the page, and display a new ‘Reading mode’ option at the bottom of your screen.
Swipe up on this to access settings for customising the font and text size – up to 250 per cent – of the streamlined article ( 1 in our screenshot right). You can also change the background colour from white to sepia, or choose the dark mode option to read white text on a black background.
The settings you apply will be saved for the next time you use reading mode. Tap the ‘Reading mode’ icon in Chrome’s top-right toolbar 2 to switch back to the standard web page.
