MERSEY EATS
Liverpool has re-invented itself in many ways over the last few years – and the re-invigorated food scene is one of the most exciting parts of that transformation, as food writer Andy Lynes discovers
Modern developments surround the red brick Royal Albert Docks (front), now a tourist attraction with cafés, restaurants and shops, with the clock towers of the Royal Liver Building (behind)
With its redeveloped docks and newly minted cultural quarters, twin cathedrals and musical heritage (did someone mention The Beatles?), Liverpool has lots to reward a weekend visit, all within a walkable city centre. And as for the food and drink scene, let’s just say it’s rocking.
THOROUGHLY MODERN DINING
If artful plates of fab food in swanky surroundings are your thing, Liverpool has got it going, ahem, here, there and everywhere. Great British Menu-winning chef Daniel McGeorge recently opened Vetch (vetchrestaurant.com) in an elegantly converted Georgian townhouse, where he serves a tasting menu of sustainable Japanese-influenced dishes. Nord (nordrestaurant.co.uk) has a funky interior design that wouldn’t look out of place in a 1960s sci-fi movie, and combines it with eyecatching Scandi-influenced dishes such as a scallop crudo with almond cream, vanilla oil and English wasabi.
