CAPTURE THE COAST!
8 MONO MAGIC
Get classic, timeless shots that convey the mood of the scene
Andrew James
No coastal study is complete without a slice of evocative black & white, and shooting in raw format will maximise your options when making the mono conversion. By using the colour sliders in raw software, such as Lightroom or Adobe Camera Raw, you can choose how dark or bright you render different colours in the mono version, and also boost contrast to make flat lighting look more gritty and dramatic. You’ll find that the sky is nearly always too bright for a detailed, balanced exposure of the land, so use the Linear Gradient tool to drag a Mask over the sky and reduce the Exposure slider to tame the brightness and get it in check with the land.
