There are 66 lighthouses located around England, Wales and the Channel Islands. These are maintained by the Trinity House charity, which built the first lighthouse at Lowestoft, Suffolk, in 1609. More can be found around the coast of Scotland, where sailors required warning of treacherous shores and dangerous tides. The Northern Lighthouse Board maintains over 200 of these, many built by the father and relatives of famous author, Robert Louis Stevenson.
