It’s that time of year again. Young adults around the UK are packing their lives away into boxes. Soon they’ll be waving goodbye to their families and heading to their university accommodation. Maybe you’re among them. This new chapter can prove to be a time for epic self-discovery, no matter your background. But what is this experience like when you’re LGBTQIA?

Like many, I grew up in a rural part of England. I didn’t have easy access to other queer or trans people. University changed this and opened up my world to queerness. Flo (they/she) is a non-binary lesbian who had a “generally positive” uni experience after moving away from a “socially conservative area”. “I built a strong community around me and was able to explore my identity,” they share.
