“Pride is both a celebration and a protest”
Of all of the things I ever did with my mum, who died last year, one of the best and most worthwhile was bringing her with me to Pride. She’d supported me from the moment I came out, but on a warm summer’s day in London when I was in my early 20s and she was in her mid-50s, she became a proper flag-waving ally. Having nabbed a prime spot outside Selfridges, we watched arm in arm as everybody LGBTQ – from NHS workers to the armed forces and even a small contingent of Mormons – paraded past us, celebrating their right to be them.
