DNA: Why choose Kinky Boots to adapt into a musical? The movie is a little sad…
Jerry Mitchell: I cried. Twice. And I immediately wanted to do it because of the bathroom scene in the movie: Lola’s in the bathroom, hiding from the factory workers and Charlie comes in and they have this conversation where they discover they are the same; they’re on common ground. Lola was Lola, and Charlie was completely straight, but they recognise that they are the same person, the same failures in their father’s eyes. I’d not seen that story before.
