Every now and then, a game’s title has you reaching for the dictionary, wondering whether it’s a real word or a neologism cooked up by the marketing team. This is one of those cases – so what, exactly, does ‘superfuse’ mean? As producer Paul Wilson explains it: “It’s a medical term for fusing parts together, putting them together in a way that maybe they’re not supposed to be”. It’s not immediately obvious how this might apply to Superfuse, the action RPG.
Wilson offers one explanation: it’s how the game itself is being made. Behind Superfuse is a team of 30, centred on a Dutch studio with one previous release to its name: pinball game Kabounce. This puts it at a disadvantage to its genre competition. “It’s going to be held up to Diablo; it’s going to be compared to Path Of Exile,” Wilson says. “We love those games. Those games are awesome.” But they’ve also got the backing of Activision and Tencent.
In Superfuse’s corner, meanwhile, is Raw Fury, the Swedish indie publisher behind Sable, Bad North and many more. Its investment in Superfuse is the most it’s ever made in a single game, and has led the publisher to reinvent the way it works with its partners. It’s taking a much more hands-on role, adding its own developers and producers, including Wilson, to the project. “We’ve had to kind of superfuse our two teams,” Wilson says.
