The first We Were Here was developed in student project, made to fill the less than three months. It was a requirements of a minor programme at Rotterdam’s University Of Applied Science. “Our objective of the course was to create a 3D platform game within 14 weeks, and to put it on Steam,” says Lucia de Visser, now co-founder and managing director of Total Mayhem Games. “And we were trying to show off a bit, so we put multiplayer in there.”
The students looked around the gaming landscape of the time, de Visser says, “and we saw that there was something missing”. They’d been fans of Portal 2’s co-op mode, but were disappointed by the lack of other games offering a similar experience. So they took that game, along with the communicationbased puzzles of Keep Talking And Nobody Explodes and the spooky atmosphere of Amnesia, “and we put it all in blender”.
