The past rarely returns to us in perfect detail. For those of us without photographic memories, at least, watercolour might just be the ideal medium for realising a formative time in our lives. Vivid and evocative, yet at times hazy and indistinct – particularly around the fringes – it’s an aesthetic that serves Dordogne’s gentle, heartfelt reminiscences particularly well.
It works, too, as an expressive way to depict the present: before protagonist Mimi casts her mind back to a summer spent with grandmother Nora just before she turned 13, she’s caught in a torrential downpour, which appears to warp the urban environment
