Who Hunts The Whale

This briskly paced epistolary satire from former standup comedian Jane Aerith Magnet and videogame critic Laura Kate Dale follows Avery Paige, whose dream job at a triple-A developer-publisher steadily becomes a nightmare. Across a series of diary entries she tracks her experiences in the Supremacy Software boardroom and with the exhausted workers outside its doors, as the authors tackle a range of themes such as crunch, sexual harassment and release-now-patch-later culture. There are moments that carry the tang of bitter experience – if Dale and Magnet don’t have firsthand insight, they’ve clearly spoken to people who have – and though its characterisation is occasionally thin, the boorish behaviour of the executives (down to their insistence that Supremacy is a ‘family’) rings uncomfortably true.
