The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR
For all that it strives to present itself as a potential future for the medium, VR game design often takes us back in time: to videogames’ roots in the arcade, and even before that, their predecessors at the fairground. Rarely has that been more explicit than in The Dark Pictures: Switchback, a follow-up to PSVR1 launch title Until Dawn: Rush Of Blood. As in that game, you’re seated in a cart that trundles along a fixed track, armed with twin pistols to shoot the targets that line your route. The only real differences are the setting – here transplanted to Supermassive’s annual horror anthology – and the titular feature, which allows you to change route at certain points by shooting a directional indicator (see ‘Losing track’).
