The Final Shape is Destiny 2 at its most glorious and Bungie at its most indulgent, an expansion to the one-of-a-kind MMORPG and peerless firstperson shooter that also feels like a kind of love letter to itself. It doubles as the climactic end of the decade-long Light And Darkness saga which began with the original Destiny, and crystallised some four years ago. Now we see Bungie, under the immense pressure of capping off its great project, compress it down to a gem.
We are, as you may have gathered, witnessing the collision of Light and Darkness. So who better to play the villain than the Witness – an amalgamation of bitter, ancient souls now hellbent on granting an ungrateful universe eternal salvation by reshaping all of existence? “It’s the end of everything,” remarks Cayde-6, the late Hunter Vanguard leader and fan-favourite character with a past that’s hard to explain, reborn thanks to Crow, a Hunter whose past is even harder to explain. Previously, The Witness seized the Traveler, the source of the Light Guardians wield as elemental powers. In The Final Shape we venture inside the Traveler, navigating wrinkles in time and space, and into its Pale Heart, a new play space partially assembled from pieces of past adventures.
