Expanding horizons
Much of the 19th-century literature we now know as classic novels was initially published episodically, in magazines. From Dickens to Dostoevsky, readers would get their fix in weekly doses, and authors structured their works accordingly, form dictated by the production methods of their time. With that in mind, it’s no doubt a sign of our time that this month’s two highest profile releases are expansions rather than standalone games. It wasn’t so long ago that we felt no pressing need to review DLC, but that the term itself now feels antiquated speaks volumes – the modern expansion is far less easy to pigeonhole.
