DIRECTOR Antonia Campbell-Hughes
CAST Cosmo Jarvis, Rhys Mannion, Claes Bang
After his powerhouse performance in Calm With Horses, Cosmo Jarvis returns to Ireland in Antonia Campbell-Hughes’ feature-directing debut, It Is In Us All. Jarvis plays Hamish Considine — the repressed son of wealthy, distant father Jack (Claes Bang) — who is involved in a violent car crash on the way to his late aunt’s estate in Donegal. Hamish is uptight and abrasive, so Jarvis’ wild, simmering on-screen energy is more restrained than usual. The stark, still cinematography is beautiful, and the themes of self-destruction and small-town despair are intriguing, but sadly the script is vastly underdeveloped. This renders the film slight and something of a slog, but it is at least a positive indication of Campbell-Hughes’ potential behind the camera.
