The Cosmic Tornado
What you see here is a Herbig-Haro (HH) object – a bright, nebulous patch of space indicating a star is forming nearby. This particular HH object, affectionately known as 49/50, was spotted by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) 625 light-years from Earth, in a region called the Chamaeleon Cloud Complex. The region is actively producing new low-mass stars that are similar to our Sun.
