If you’re into football, you’ll know that ITV has chosen “Life Is a Highway” as the soundtrack for its coverage of the FIFA World Cup. It’s the Rascal Flatts 2006 cover version, most famous for its appearance in the Pixar movie Cars, when Lightning McQueen and Mack are en route to California. It’s a catchy song, although you’re probably sick of hearing it this summer.
Well, to borrow a phrase from a 1980s children’s TV show, why don’t you switch off the TV and do something less boring instead? Like reading the latest issue of our mag.
We’ve been experiencing life on the highway, with no fewer than three road trips in issue 41. Our cover story is an epic adventure in a very yellow and very 1990s pick-up. It’s the Škoda Felicia Fun, which turned more heads than a Wimbledon final on its way to North Wales, and is now firmly on the list of ‘must buy before we die’ cars.
It arguably warrants a home in the magnificent Isle of Man Motor Museum, which is the subject of this issue’s A Slightly Daft Adventure. If you’re looking for a good day out this summer, we can fully endorse a trip into the middle of the Irish Sea to visit what is probably one of our favourite motor museums… in the world.
Not to be outdone, Tim Pitt got up early to drive a freshly restored Peugeot 205 GTI to the Bicester Scramble. Is it the greatest hot hatch of all time, he asks. Well, he took the long way home to find out.
This issue’s Picture Past comes from the Fondazione Pirelli in Milan. We flew there, but next time we’re driving. Or, at the very least, flying and returning home in something Italian.
Elsewhere, Nat Barnes tells us what it was like to be a young road tester in the 1990s, we tip our baseball caps to the Vauxhall Meriva VXR, and Dimitri Urbain salutes the Peugeot 504. All of this, plus six of the best Mitsuokas, the Autozam AZ-1, a Mk1 Ford Fiesta with a wonderful backstory, and the usual mix of period adverts, adventures, news and events.
