43 Commando Force Protection Group RM

Ex Deutsch Strike

On 11 July, O Sqn departed Faslane, heading to Sennelager, Germany, for Ex Deutsch Strike. Navigating the length of the UK in a convoy of hire cars, we reached Folkestone where we transferred to coaches to go through the Channel Tunnel, marking our entry into mainland Europe. After a few hours of travel through France, Belgium and the Netherlands, we arrived at Sennelager Camp, situated just outside Paderborn, which would serve as our home for the following three weeks.

Fire Team takes up position

Upon arrival, the Squadron underwent essential safety briefings, received a tour of the camp and zeroed weapons in preparation for live fire tactical training. The first week in Germany focused on honing individual skills and drills, transitioning from the tight corridors and fast-paced building clearances we were accustomed to in our primary role to the open fields and dense woodlands of Germany.

During this initial week, the Squadron engaged in various blank firing serials, working in fire teams and later in sections. In true ‘Commando mindset’ fashion, we transitioned seamlessly back into the traditional green role. In the latter part of the week, we also participated in live fire lanes, which further sharpened our individual capabilities and prepared us for the next phase of training. The summer weather was largely favourable, although we did bring enough of Scotland with us to ensure we were sufficiently wet to be classed as amphibious troops.

After an intensive week of training, the Sqn welcomed the weekend although not before a physically demanding session led by the Sqn Sgt Maj (SSM) who promised that he’d still have planned the same session even if it wasn’t his last day in the role although he refused to put his eyebrows on this. After we had recovered, the Sqn came together for a well-deserved barbecue in the afternoon sun, enjoying some food and a few wets as we bid farewell to the SSM who was departing that week. The weekend also included excursions to Cologne and Hamburg, where the lads explored the sights and got a suitable taste of German culture.
