Royal Marines Cadets

Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset’s CCF Cadet

RM Cadet Sgt George Monk has been selected to be the Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset’s CCF Cadet for 2025-26. He was accompanied by his family and staff for his inauguration in a ceremony at Taunton Racecourse.

Each year, the Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset, along with other counties up and down the country, appoints several young people to serve as a Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadet. In Somerset, the award is given to up to six top cadets per year drawn from all branches of the Sea Cadets, Army Cadets, the Air Training Corps, the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) and from civil uniformed youth organisations across the county.

When on duty, Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadets wear a distinctive sash with the badge of their appointment to denote their role. They assist the Lord-Lieutenant as required, often on parade for Royal visits and act as ambassadors for their organisations and the young people of Somerset.

They are chosen on their merits within their respective cadet forces and for their dedication and work within the local community. This accolade recognises and honours true commitment and dedication to the Reserve and Cadet Forces.

Cadet Sgt Monk has been involved with Millfield Cadets from Year nine (the earliest opportunity) and has thrown himself into every possible event. He has since grown into a valued member of the cadet team, from even as early as his second year in cadets he was able to help instruct the new intake, give positive benefit and valued experience to the students and in most cases his peers. His list of achievements are plentiful: Ten Tors team leader 35/45/55 mile events, Bronze, Silver DofE, he has attended various Cadet summer camps as a Section Commander (Army and RM) and was chosen to represent the CCF at the National Act of Remembrance at the Cenotaph and the Royal Albert Hall. He is a key member of our RM Pringle Trophy winning team and the Standard Bearer at school events. He will be a fantastic Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadet, he is the epitome of resilience but understands not all are equal. He is experienced but humble, polite and has presence and is no stranger to being out front under a bit of pressure.
