AESTHETICS GUIDE
Golden GIRLS
Alice Hart-Davis, founder of The Tweakments Guide, reports on the rise of ageless 50-somethings
(Clockwise from main image) Naomi Campbell, Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Lopez and Victoria Beckham look very different to how The Golden Girls (inset above right) portrayed women in their 50s
Idon’t know about you, but when I was growing up, 50 seemed quite old. Not ancient, but certainly past it. Remember the TV series The Golden Girls? That’s how 50-somethings were portrayed in the 1980s (the actresses were actually in their 60s).
Now, that 50-something age bracket looks very different. Think of Naomi Campbell, Victoria Beckham, Cate Blanchett and Jennifer Lopez, all fresh-faced with shiny hair, lithe bodies and stylish wardrobes.
The way we think about getting older has changed, and there’s an increasing awareness of what’s possible with healthy living, HRT and, of course, tweakments.
There just weren’t any tweakments available in the 1980s. In the chasm between facials and facelifts, there were a few dermatologists using cosmetic lasers for the sort of savage skin-resurfacing that left you looking like a peeled tomato for weeks, and a few nurses offering filler injections made from collagen.
