Most of us will have noticed how stress or tiredness show up on our faces. A few sleepless nights can result in a rough, dull complexion, or you may find that anxiety triggers breakouts. Research confirms that our mental health has a direct impact on the health of our skin – and now aesthetic clinics are taking note.
Hormones such as the primary stress hormone cortisol can lead to inflammation and premature ageing. A study published in The Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology found that high stress levels can impair the skin’s barrier function, leading to dryness, irritation and even flare-ups of conditions including eczema and psoriasis. What’s more, studies highlight the connection between poor mental health and disrupted sleep, which reduces the skin’s ability to repair and regenerate.
