Did you know?
There are over 4,000 PS2 games
Sony’s 1994 entrance into the video games console market with the PlayStation 1 was an industry game changer, but no one could have envisaged just how popular its successor would be when it launched in 2000. The PS2 stood out from other consoles in the same generation by offering backwards compatibility with the PlayStation 1’s controllers, as well as its predecessor’s entire back catalogue of games. It featured a central processing unit (CPU) that notably rivalled PC CPUs of the day, plus a graphics processor with dedicated video memory and an optional 40-gigabyte hard drive for storage. Its games were DVDbased and it had an internal DVD drive that doubled up as a movie player. At a time when standalone DVD playback devices were costly, it made sense for a lot of consumers to buy the PS2 and effectively get two entertainment systems for the price of one.
