Cutting through clouds

A NASA pilot captured this spectacular view of the STS-5launch in 1982 as it rocketed past the clouds, leaving a trail of black smoke. This was the fifth flight of Space Shuttle Columbia, delivering two commercial satellites into space. For each of the Space Shuttle launches, NASA used researcher support aircraft, also known as chase planes, to relay information about the craft’s flight progress to ground control.
