Bountyful beauty

The Seychelles offers gay travellers a taste of the garden of Eden — without the worries that go with some paradise islands

Have you ever dreamed of escaping the pressures of life by taking a holiday on a paradise island? Of stretching out on a white, sandy beach or splashing around in a shallow, turquoise sea? Many of us have, particularly those of us who, like me, grew up during the Eighties, when adverts for Bounty bars exploited these fantasies to promote “the taste of paradise.”

Unfortunately, the reality is that gay people still aren’t welcome on some of those paradise islands. Gay sex is illegal in Mauritius, the Maldives and Barbados – all of which stand in contrast to the Seychelles, which in June 2016 became one of the few paradise-island destinations to legalise homosexuality.

But what’s the reality for gay travellers? Do the people of the Seychelles actually welcome us to their country? Dreaming of those Bounty adverts I’d watched as a child, I went to find out.

The Republic of the Seychelles is an archipelago of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean, almost 1,000 miles off the coast of East Africa. The climate is hot and humid, with a rainy season from December to February, but as the country lies outside the cyclone belt, the weather is usually calm.
