As bass player first with Wham! and then on George Michael’s solo albums Faith and Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1, Detroitborn Deon Estus witnessed at close quarters the singer’s ascent from shy, prodigious teenager to mature artist warring with his record label for creative freedom. Seven years older than George, Estus already had experience of the music industry as a member of the US R&B band Brainstorm then as part of Marvin Gaye’s Belgium-based group with whom he made Sexual Healing. With George, Estus worked on the Boogie Box High album and Michael produced Deon’s solo LP Spell, which yielded the Billboard Top Five hit, Heaven Help Me. Deon would go on to work with the likes of Tina Turner, Annie Lennox and Elton John and is currently writing new music. Now 63, he looks back with Classic Pop on a 40-year career…
