SUGAR: NO PLACE LEFT TO HIDE
Health officials recently warned that a single yoghurt pot can contain the entirety of a child’s daily sugar allowance – up to five sugar cubes. Meanwhile, it’s been revealed some iced-coffee drinks contain more sugar than soda. The rise of hidden sugars adds to a growing obesogenic environment that steers us towards unhealthy choices – whether conscious or not. And it’s this state of affairs that prompted a ban on junk food ads on London’s public transport. With the sugar tax whipping the drinks industry into shape, should we be focusing on hidden sugars? It’s been argued that more needs to be done on a governmental level but, as individuals, it comes down to be being smart. When a fat-free yogurt still tastes like a chocolate fudge brownie, heed caution. Chances are it’s been packed with sugars and sweeteners to replace the stripped fats – so always check the label.
