We’ve long known that physical activity can reduce depression and anxiety, but now researchers have sifted through the available evidence – 23 studies – to explore whether exercise positively increases good mental health. They found solid evidence of an association between activity and positive mood, and interestingly also revealed that you don’t have to put in hours and hours to reap the benefits; several studies confirmed that happiness levels were the same whether people exercised for 150-300 minutes a week, or more than 300. Also, compared to totally inactive people, the odds of being happy was 29 per cent higher for sufficiently active people and, among very active people, the odds of greater happiness was 52 per cent higher. If that’s not a good reason to lace up your trainers, slip on your swimsuit or layer up your Lycra, then we don’t know what is!
