We’re always advising friends to be themselves, yet how many of us have a ‘work personality’ that we hope makes us popular and promotable? Well, now a study has found fake-believing in company values to fit in is bad for your health and your career prospects.
Research from McGill University in Montreal found employees often behave inauthentically to match their employer’s culture – but the result is they feel uncomfortable expressing themselves. ‘When people are true to themselves, they’re more likely to feel connected to work, which can enhance personal wellbeing and work performance overall’, says associate professor Patricia Hewlin. Try life coach Nicola Findlay’s tips for going from ‘yes man’ to ‘hell no’:
