You might be short on space but, with a little bit of creative thinking, there are still lots of growing options, says Rob Smith

With the average new build house garden becoming smaller than ever and more people making space for a small veg patch, it’s really important to know what you can grow in your space and how to use it to its maximum capacity. The last thing you want to do in your veg patch is grow something that takes over and fills the entire space with hardly any harvest. This is fine if you have acres or an allotment or two, but for space limited gardeners… the sky’s the limit!

GROWING UPWARDS

Vegetables for a small space doesn’t always mean small vegetables, it simply involves becoming more creative with what or how you grow. One of the easiest and most productive ways to grow is upwards! Growing crops which can be trained skyward means that you still only use a small footprint of earth, yet you will be rewarded with a great crop. This may mean training plants up walls or fences, or even letting your climbing veg ramble through a shrub or up a climbing rose.
