Mime and performance artist Trygve Wakenshaw talks to OM about his passion for yoga and how it enthuses his work on the stage


Trygve Wakenshaw (pronounced trig-vee) is an award-winning performer who specialises in physical comedy. He’s very funny with his body and his face and his ability to turn a black box theatre into a strange and magical world which charts the contours of his imagination.

Originally from New Zealand, he now lives in Prague, Czech Republic and travels the world performing. And he also loves yoga as a way to help him stay fit and alert both on stag e and off it. OM caught up with him recently to find out more.

How did you first get into yoga

It was introduced to me as a physical warmup to start a day of rehearsals working with several companies in New Zealand. I loved it, and several years later, just through coincidence, I moved into an apartment which was shared with an ashtanga studio. I could roll out of bed and be in a led primary series class in the space of 20 seconds. That’s probably how I got started; my body began to remember the sequence. I’d come and go from regular practice, and still do, but my body would know where it wanted to go when I was back on a mat. The third stage of my discovery of yoga was at the end of a holiday in Indonesia. I’d travelled alone, gone without my phone or internet for a month, climbed mountains, sat on the beach, read books, swam in the sea, and had found such calm happiness in that. I wanted to find a way to access that same calmness and selfcare while surrounded by my city life again.
