RUNTHROUGH VICTORIA PARK HALF MARATHON
Since moving to London at the end of last year, I’d been looking forward to shaking up my running routine a bit, by taking part in more local races – ones that fitted in with my training for the Virgin Money London Marathon in April. When searching for an event my main criteria were: flat, friendly and easy to get to. I’d heard about RunThrough’s race series on social media and it seemed like its Victoria Park race fitted the bill nicely.
The start was about a 15-minute walk from the nearest tube station and the race village was well-organised with a lively atmosphere. There were three races happening on the day: a 5K, 10K and a half marathon, so there were lots of people milling about and getting ready for the races to begin.
Despite arriving with plenty of time to spare, 20 seconds before the half marathon start time I was running across the park at full speed, lungs burning and still holding my backpack (which a very nice marshal sorted out for me after I flung it in a mild panic into entirely the wrong section of the bag drop). I’ve found out the hard way on many training runs that it’s best not to ignore the call of nature before running any sizeable distance, but I probably shouldn’t have left the toilet dash quite so last minute…
